 What Are Stellest Lenses?

Essilor Stellest lenses are advanced eyeglass lenses designed specifically for children with myopia (nearsightedness).

Unlike standard glasses that only correct blurry vision, Stellest lenses are designed to slow the progression of myopia over time.

They use highly aspherical lenslet technology to help manage how light focuses on the retina—supporting healthier visual development as your child grows.

 Why Myopia Control Matters

Myopia isn’t just about needing stronger glasses each year.

As it progresses, it can increase the risk of serious eye health conditions later in life, including:

  • Retinal detachment
  • Glaucoma
  • Myopic macular degeneration

Slowing progression early can make a lifelong difference.

 Who Is a Good Candidate?

Stellest lenses may be a great option if your child:

  • Has been diagnosed with myopia
  • Needs stronger glasses each year
  • Is between ages ~6–16
  • Prefers glasses over contact lenses

During your child’s exam, we’ll determine if this is the best option—or if another myopia management treatment is more appropriate.

 How Effective Are Stellest Lenses?

Clinical studies have shown that Stellest lenses can significantly reduce myopia progression compared to standard single vision lenses.

Many families choose this option because it’s:

  • Non-invasive
  • Easy to use (just wear glasses!)
  • Backed by strong research

Stellest Lenses FAQ

  1. Are Stellest lenses covered by insurance? Some insurance companies such as VSP and Eyemed do offer a benefit toward Stellest lenses.
  2. How are Stellest lenses different from regular glasses? These lenses are specifically designed to slow progression of myopia (nearsightedness) while regular glasses only correct current distance vision.  Stellest uses HALT technology to create a light pattern that signals the eye to slow down how quickly it is lengthening.
  3. What happens if my child stops wearing them? If your child is still a candidate for myopia management (their eyes are still growing) and they stop wearing Stellest without starting another myopia management treatment, their eyes will resume growing longer and become more nearsighted.
  4. My child is only a little nearsighted.  Would he or she benefit from these? Absolutely!  Any amount of nearsightedness qualifies for these lenses, and studies are even showing some benefit to treating children who have a low level of farsightedness because they have a higher risk of developing myopia.
  5. Does it matter what frame we pick? Frame selection is key with any lenses, but especially with Stellest.  Lightweight frames that do not slide off the face are recommended, and the eyes should be centered in the lens.  Measurements are taken to ensure the center of the prescription will line up with the center of your pupil. Our expert opticians will help you select the perfect fit!
  6. What follow up is needed? We will check on you a few weeks after you pick up your new glasses to ensure they are staying properly adjusted, and once again in 6 months to get a prescription and axial length (eyeball length) measurement.
